True Love

Beautiful BacksideToday is Valentine’s Day, and despite the fact that Birgitta and I live in an all-female household, l-o-v-e  is still the predominant sentiment on this day. But then, that’s true of all the days since little Emerald arrived.

Not that Birgitta and I don’t share a loving relationship. We do. But ever since last October when Emerald was born, smiles and laughter have been extra-bountiful. The baby’s gurgles often morph into our giggles, and her animated face finds us running for cameras.

When Birgitta was pregnant, I wasn’t sure if she would “take” to motherhood. Although some of her siblings have been baby-people from the get-go, she wasn’t one of them. But after Emerald’s birth, God flipped a switch of some sort within her, causing new feelings of love to sprout and quickly take root in her heart. From my vantage point, it’s been delightful to watch.

Scripture flat-out tells us that God is love (1 John 4:8), and I believe he’s the initiator of all mother-love, including Birgitta’s burst of love for Emerald. Not that having a baby hasn’t made her life much more work and a lot less play.

Going out socially is rare, and when Birgitta goes, Emerald goes, too. In every way (except attending her college classes) she is partnered with her daughter. But even with such round-the-clock baby demands, after being gone at school she’ll walk in the door and make a beeline for Emerald. “I missed you!”

Celebrating!

If God hadn’t infused Birgitta with this overpowering love for her baby, it would have been difficult for her to summon it up on her own. The fact that he planted it there (and in virtually every mother) is an endowment of incalculable value. It goes against human logic to passionately love someone who has taken away all your privacy, your peace, your sleep, your social life, your free time and every other freedom you used to have. Yet that’s what I see happening in front of me daily.

God is, indeed, the initiator and ultimate celebrator of love, and thus of Valentine’s Day. After all, he loved us before we loved him, but that’s not the half of it. He loved us even before we existed, a concept we can’t entirely understand but are very happy to accept, and no matter what we do or don’t do, his love doesn’t fluctuate.

God's Valentine

We might imagine him saying, “Please be my Valentine… for always.” And that’s an offer we’d be foolish to refuse.

“God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. We love because he first loved us. (1 John 4:16,19)

Miss Octopus

Little Emerald is a happy baby, smiling even when she’s exhausted or hungry, sometimes when we’re not even looking at her. And if she’s crying, the slightest encouragement brings a smile while she’s still in tears. She even smiles at her rattles and toys, though she saves her best grins for one toy in particular: Miss Octopus.

Miss Octopus

This aqua-colored stuffed animal was designed to hang from a baby’s play gym, but Emerald liked it so much we hung it from a kitchen cabinet instead. Not a day goes by that she doesn’t have several communication sessions with Miss Octopus, gazing up at her from a blanket on the counter.

I don’t think Emerald loves Miss Octopus with the same adoration she feels for Birgitta, but there’s definitely a strong attraction. When she gets a glimpse of her blue friend she gets instantly happy, no matter what her mood.

Emerald’s world is limited compared to the rest of us. She’s never been far from home and is happiest when keeping to a calm, slightly dull routine. Because of that, it doesn’t take much to get her excited.

That’s not true for the rest of us. We’ve been around the block a few times, so to speak, and it takes quite a bit more than the wide smile of a stuffed octopus to get us going. That’s especially true of our spiritual lives. We might find that our Bible reading and prayer times don’t enthuse us anymore, though we’re not sure of the reason.

Maybe it’s because we haven’t experienced God doing anything for us lately, so we’ve become indifferent toward him. And the reason behind that might be we’ve forgotten what he looks like, so have missed what he’s done for us.

Scripture tells us how to “see” him. We’re to watch for unusual circumstances that first appear to be merely coincidental. Do they have something to do with what we’ve prayed about? If so, could it be God’s movement we’re seeing?

We’ve also learned that when life starts falling apart, we’re supposed to watch for him. In the midst of everything going bad, he’s usually right around the corner. Another place we might see him is just after we’ve received shocking news of any kind. When we cry out in anguish, he responds from nearby, showing himself to be very close.

Delight over Miss Octopus

There are other ways we can see God too, such as in the natural world, but none of the above “sightings” will happen without one prerequisite: we have to look for him. And just like little Emerald looks for Miss Octopus when she’s put on the kitchen counter, we ought to strain to see our Lord. Then, when we do, it’ll be even more exciting than Emerald getting a glimpse of her much-loved octo-friend.

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13)

I swear….

Barack Obama Sworn In As U.S. President For A Second TermToday was a big day for the United States when our 44th president was sworn into his second term as the nation’s leader. Barack Obama did what most presidents before him have done during the ceremony; he put his hand atop a Bible held by his wife while reciting his formal oath of office.

Why a Bible?

“Swearing” on the Word of God brings the authority of the Almighty into the promises being made. It’s a gesture indicating that the oath-taker is aware of God as his witness and as a result, plans to follow through with what he’s saying he will do… for God and for us.

Here’s what he said today: “I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States and will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, so help me God.”

I heard our president say these words and know in his heart he’ll try his best to follow through. And I’m impressed that most presidents make this all-important promise with a hand on the Bible. In President Obama’s case, it was two Bibles. Well, actually, three.

Since the official Inauguration Day fell on a Sunday this year, he took his oath privately yesterday using Michelle’s family Bible (originally purchased at Chicago’s Moody Bible Institute Bookstore). Today his hand rested on a stack of two  more Bibles, those belonging to Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King.

As I saw his hand resting on the Scriptures, I thought of how significant it would have been had he chosen to use his own Bible. Since he testifies to being a Christian, I would assume he has a copy of his preferred translation for private reading and personal study. (Maybe these days he uses a Bible app. But what about before iphones?)

I wish I could have seen that Bible, our president’s Bible, as the underpinning of his oath of office today. Maybe it has a well-worn cover and rumpled pages from faithful use. Maybe the binding is loose and the bookmark-ribbon frayed. Had he used it, it would have made a powerful statement of his relationship with the Lord at a pivotal moment in history (both for us, and for him).

It’s possible that offense might have been taken by some watching, but the sight of his well-loved, well-used Bible would have boosted my confidence with respect to what will unfold for our country’s citizens and for the world during these next four years.

Barack Obama Sworn In As U.S. President For A Second Term

But regardless of the Bible choices he made, and I know they were made with care, I’m glad God’s Word was acknowledged at the inauguration and that President Obama chose (despite speculation otherwise) to put a powerful exclamation point at the end of his oath: “…so help me God.”

And I’m sure God will.

“He swore an oath by the One who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and what is in it, the earth and what is in it, and the sea and what is in it.” (Revelation 10:6)
